African folklore provides that if you're attracted to the cowrie shell, you carry the strength of the ocean.  Additionally, in many West African cultures the cowrie shell is regarded as a sign of fertility and has many uses and meanings. The cowrie shell is one of the recognizable symbols in African culture and was one of the first signs of wealth and money known to mankind. Found in the Indian Ocean and the Sahara desert. Cowrie shells are especially important in much of ancient Africa.

The influence of these shells also spread to China. Chinese used its shape to form their pictograph for money. In Africa, and in the Americas, the cowrie symbolized destiny and prosperity.  Wherever cowrie shells appear, they almost always symbolize wealth and fertility.

Spiritual meaning: In African legend, a love of cowrie shells shows that you may be akin to an ocean spirit of wealth and earth. Cowrie shells also represent the Goddess of protection in the ocean; also thought of as the mouth of Orisha.

Today, cowrie shells make dazzling and eye-catching jewelry and decorations. They're popular for jewelry, and religious accessories all over the world.
